Fairtrade Promotes Consumerism by Alleviating Guilt

I once met a charming young American lady in Vietnam. Her family was originally Vietnamese and had emigrated to California before she was born; and they had prospered there, building a booming business in office furniture. Before joining Law School, she decided to take a break and to visit her parents’ homeland. She took the opportunity to donate her time as an English schoolteacher as she felt giving back was the only fair thing to do, because she had received so much in her childhood, and that the kids in Vietnam had received nothing. She felt it was her duty because while she had received a good education and tons of opportunities, most of the kids she taught would never even be able to purchase a plane ticket. She genuinely felt sorry and indebted to them. Continue reading

I love shopping (ramblings from an alter ego)

“I love shopping because life is a bitch. Its my way out of the ditch. When my consciousness comes knocking at the cortex door, bugging me with questions like “who are you?”, my head spins and hurts. Who the fuck am I? My babyboomer parents, Mr. Cash and Miss Freedom, have fathered a bastard child of a value system. My ideas are constantly pingponged between left and right, liberal and conservative, and honestly I’ve stopped giving a damn. Now, I don’t care about politics, I don’t give two shits about religion, I piss on the poor and I ignore the rich. Admitedly, sometimes I care about Mother Earth, scary shit: better get myself checked or I’ll end up in a cult. Friends say they love me one day, act like cunts the next day, are they conspiring? Anyway, whose friend are they, if I don’t know who I am? My friends are idiots. I can’t remember producing one original thought in my whole life! I’ve been repeating what I’ve heard from TV/Radio/school/blogs. When I wanna act angry, I quote David Chapelle or Southpark and I get a quick laugh – rare moments of glory, pathetic crowd pleasing stunts. I love shopping and I’ll tell you why, because that’s who I am, a big pile of consumerism. When I shop, I create jobs. Boy, do I love the economy! I got a job so I could shop. Wanna know what I do? I’ll tell you what I do: I love shopping. I love shopping.”
